About Open Primaries
OpenPrimaries.org is committed to ending the rules, regulations, and practices that prevent the American people from fully participating in every phase of our electoral process.
Recent polls show that 40% of Americans now consider themselves to be political independents. Despite the growing disillusion with political parties, 17 states still prevent independents from voting in presidential primaries, and many more prevent independents from voting in state and local primaries.
In response to the dramatic impact that independents had in the 2008 presidential election (watch the new documentary about just how influential independents were in 2008), Democratic and Republican legislators are actively working to close primaries in many states where they are currently open.
OpenPrimaries.org is a project of IndependentVoting.org, a non-partisan, 501 (c) 4 non profit organization working to reform our political process and empower independent voters. OpenPrimaries.org was launched by John Opdycke and Nomi Azulay, two long time IndependentVoting.org activists.
