Primary Type Definitions



  • Voters may or may not choose to affiliate with a political party, however, affiliation with a party is required to vote in primary elections.
  • 23% of Nevada voters are registered as nonpartisan.


Details of voting in congressional and state primary elections:

  • Voters must affiliate with a party to vote in that party's primary.
  • Registration closes 20 days before the primary election. 

In 2020, State Senator Ben Kieckhefer proposed a top two open primaries initiative to all ALL Nevadans to vote in taxpayer-funded primaries.
